Introduction
The path to becoming an author is rarely straightforward, and mine was no exception. It was a journey fueled by the dual forces within me—Twain, the easygoing storyteller, and Twainlawz, the energetic, rebellious poet. Together, they crafted the writer I am today, but the road wasn’t without its twists, moments of conflict, and self-discovery.
Twain: The Origin
My story began at Munro College, a traditional all-boys high school in Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, where I spent my formative years. In 2018, at 17 years old, I became the student council president, an experience that sparked a passion for leadership and advocacy. During my time in 6th form, I wrote my first creative piece, a moment that unknowingly birthed the alter ego Twainlawz—the side of me that would later emerge with a rebellious spirit.
Twain, my primary identity, was shaped by those years at Munro. He is kind and warm, always willing to give of himself, often to the point of having little left for his own needs. Twain’s writing is careful and detailed, focusing on storytelling with depth and introspection. For a long time, I believed Twain was destined to become a medical doctor, a plan I intended to follow with the full support of my godfather, who was also a doctor. In 2018, the plan was set in motion: I was supposed to leave Jamaica to study medicine at Anhui Medical University in China.
Twainlawz: The Rebel Emerges
However, life had other plans. As much as Twain was the planner, the peace-seeker, Twainlawz emerged with a fierce determination to carve a different path. Twainlawz is energetic, frank, and unafraid of standing up for what is right. He is a poet, an artist, and a rebel—born out of the tensions I faced at Munro, where I frequently stood up for my fellow students, sometimes against the administration itself. I realized over time that my battles weren’t against authority, but rather for fairness and justice.
Twainlawz rebelled against the idea of conforming to the expectations laid before me, especially when it came to the medical path. So, instead of pursuing medicine in 2018, I stayed in Jamaica and chose a different route—a decision that marked the beginning of my internal struggle.
The Breaking Point: A Choice
Without medical school, Twain found himself stepping into the 9-to-5 world, ironically working for the very government system I had opposed in high school. I began working a government job on November 1, 2020, a position I would hold for the next 18 months. During this time, Twainlawz made brief appearances—moments where I could feel his restless energy—but I largely remained caught up in the daily grind. Working in the system was draining, especially for someone who had once been so critical of it. I could feel both Twain and Twainlawz yearning for something more, but the security of a stable job kept me in place.
By May 2022, it became clear that this life wasn’t sustainable. The creative dreams born during my days at Munro and at the University of the West Indies (UWI) refused to stay buried. Twainlawz resurfaced in full force, determined to create, to express, and to pursue the vision that had haunted me since high school.
Finding God and Losing Self
Later that year, in September 2022, I found myself turning to faith, seeking meaning and purpose through Christianity. Twain was searching for peace and guidance, and so I embraced the life of a Christian, taking on the cross and the pursuit of righteousness. But as I tried to walk the path of faith, I also struggled with sin—drinking, smoking, partying, and fornication became frequent companions as I drifted further from myself and deeper into the teachings of the church. It was a difficult time, a period where my identity felt fragmented, and I found myself torn between two worlds: one of spiritual awakening and the other of creative ambition.
The Author Emerges
By 2023, everything seemed to come crashing down. I lost my job, and I parted ways with the church. Yet, through the chaos, something remarkable happened: Twain and Twainlawz finally began to work in harmony. Together, we embarked on a new journey, one that had always been on the horizon—becoming an author.
In 2023, I published my first book of poetry, A Body of Work, on Amazon. The collection recites the injustices I’d witnessed within the Jamaican government and speaks to the human experience—finding light, truth, and motivation for people of all races, all written in the raw and unfiltered style of Twainlawz. But this was only the beginning.
Visionaire Publishing and the Dream Beyond
In the same year, 2023, I founded Visionaire Publishing and Media, with the hope of helping young Jamaican authors realize their dream of getting their stories out to the world. The mission of Visionaire is simple: all aspiring authors have to do is send in their manuscripts, and we take care of the rest—turning their creativity into something the world can see and feel. Our slogan, “Turning Manuscripts into Gold,” reflects our belief that the real gold mine is a “golden mind.”
So far, Visionaire has published A Sobering Awakening by author Jordon Robertson, and we are currently in discussions with other talented authors, eager to bring their work to the world. Our vision doesn’t end here—we’re growing, and we invite everyone to visit our website at visionairepublishing.com to see the work we’re doing. As for Twain and Twainlawz, we’re continuing our creative journey, working on our second book, The Creative Xpression. This book will be filled with stories of reflection and acceptance, and with our new partnership with Pikchabox, we are positioning ourselves for something even bigger. By 2025, we aim to become a best-selling author or to help another author achieve that dream. The journey isn’t over, but we’re moving forward with purpose and determination.
